| Anwar El-Sadat He was born in Meit Abul Kom village located
in Menoufeya Govornorate, graduated from the Military Academy in 1938 and was appointed in
the Signal Corps.
When the revolution erupted, he was assigned to take over the Radio and TV networks and
announce the outbreak of the revolution to the Egyptian people. In 1954 Sadat was
appointed Mininster of State, then in 1959 assumed the position of Secretary to the
National Union. Sadat served as Speaker of the People's Council between 1960 - 1968, Vice
President and member of the Presidential Council in 1964. Sadat was reappointed as Vice
President in December 1969.
After the death of President Gamal Abd El- Nasser, Anwar Sadat was elected President of
Egypt in October 1970 and was reelected for a second term in October 1976. One of Sadat's
major achievements was that he engineered and led the 1973 war in which the Egyptian army
managed to cross the Suez Canal accomplishing a significant victory. Moreover, late
President Sadat pursued further intensified endeavors in the area of establishing peace
with Israel which successfully resulted into restoring Egypt's authority over the land of
Sinai.
On the intellectual level, Sadat authored several books "The Full Story of the
Revolution, Unknown Pages of the Revolution", Son, This Is Your
Uncle Gamal , and "In Search of Self".
And in a dramatic end, a group of fundamentalists plotted
the assassination of Sadat who
was shot dead during the celebrations of the 6th of October of 1981. |
