President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian leader Yasser
Arafat held a meeting immediately upon the latters arrival to Sharm El Sheikh on a
short visit.
The two leaders discussed the latest developments in the volatile situation in the
Palestinian land and the continued military escalation against the Palestinians.
Discussions also touched on the frozen situation on the Palestinian track of the peace
process.

President Mubarak inaugurated a 2-day emergency pan
Arab summit held amidst seriously complex and tense circumstances. 16 Kings, Presidents
and Emirs took part in the summit as well as representatives of the rest of Arab states.
Attendees shared a major concern regarding the escalation of violence against Palestinians
in the occupied lands. At the end of the summit participants were successfully able to
reach a consensus on a final communiqué which condemned Israeli aggression against
Palestinians and requested an immediate stop of the violent practices.

President Mubarak and US President Bill Clinton
co-chaired an emergency summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El- Sheikh. Participants of
the summit included Jordanian King Abdullah II, Palestinian President Yasser Arafat,
Israeli PM Ehud Barak, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Javier Solana Security and
Foreign Affairs Envoy of the European Union. All dignitaries gathered in this summit
aiming to achieve a common objective, which is providing a just and immediate solution for
the escalating violence sweeping the Palestinian occupied territories. Several bilateral
meetings took place as well at the side of the summit in an effort to crystallize a final
communiqué that would identify a common ground for parties to resume the peace
negotiations.

Foreign Secretary Robin Cook described the policies, which Israel adopted recently against
Palestinians in the occupied lands as seriously harmful to the peace process. Mubarak
further made it clear that Israeli aggression must come to a complete halt immediately.

affairs to accelerate the preparation for an emergency Arab summit to be held this month
in Cairo. Mubaraks call came after the end of his meeting that took place in the

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. The summit is planned to address the deterioration
of the Israeli/ Palestinian situation and the erupted violence.
