President Mubarak receives US Middle East peace envoy US Assistant Secretary of State William Burns, who is also the US Middle East peace envoy. Burns, was accompanied by retired Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni, listened to the Egyptian government's viewpoint about the latest developments in the region and the American efforts to find a settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli crisis in light of US Secretary of State Colin Powell's address and Mitchell report.

In the framework of consultations by President Mubarak in the light of the initiative announced by Secretary of State Colin Powell regarding the peace process and the establishment of a Palestinian State, President Mubarak held a tête-à-tête session with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. Then the two leaders held an expanded session attended by members of the Egyptian and Palestinian delegations.

President Mubarak received Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt who was leading an EU delegation to the Middles East. Verhofstadt described the talks with Mubarak as fruitful confirming the agreement of Egyptian /European viewpoints regarding boosting the peace process.

President Mubarak, during the opening ceremony of Al –Fardan bridge crossing over Suez Canal, affirmed to reporters that a solution must be identified for the peace process in order to avoid serious consequences.

President Mubarak, in a joint press conference with his French counterpart Jacques Chirac following a two-hour session of talking, confirmed the necessity to resolve the Palestinian issue in order to establish peace in the Middle East. Both leaders also affirmed that the anti terrorism campaign should not extend beyond Afghanistan.
