President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian LeaderYasser Arafat held two sessions to probe the goings-on of peace process, the US proposals and the Palestinian-Israeli reaction towards proposals.President Mubarak and Arafat started a meeting at Al-Salam Palace in Heliopolis immediately after Arafat's arrival in Cairo.

President Hosni Mubarak received US Ambassador to Egypt Daniel Kurtzer and discussed with him developments in the Middle East peacemaking. Kurtzer, who later met with Foreign Minister Amr Moussa told reporters that he presented an assessment of the US-sponsored negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis in Washington and familiarised the President with the ideas proposed by President Bill Clinton to bring the two sides closer.

Addressing the Islamic nation today on the occasion of Lailatul Qadr (the Night on which the Holy Quran was revealed unto Prophet Muhammad), President Hosni Mubarak called on the Islamic countries to stick together in order to face the challenges of the coming century.

President Mubarak and Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat reviewed the latest developments in the light of the Palestinian-Israeli contacts in Washington which are aimed at reaching a final solution.  Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has expressed Egypt's interest in reaching a just settlement in the framework of international legitimacy. He said minimum and maximum limits of an acceptable settlement is something which concerns Palestinians alone.

President Mubarak said democracy dictates respect for the constitution adding that judicial supervision of elections gave citizens wider freedom to select their representatives and increased turnout. President Mubarak said the turnout in future will be higher in the upcoming elections mainly in cities and the countryside after the people gained more confidence in the state keenness to respect the freedom of opinion.This came following the President's meeting with the armed forces commanders and officers at the annual Iftar which was held at Infantry house

President Hosni Mubarak received German Defence Minister Rudolf Scharping, currently visiting Egypt.The meeting was attended by Defence and Military Production Minister Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.Scharping arrived in Cairo Sunday on a four-day visit toEgypt invited by Tantawi. Scharping praised Egypt's role under President Hosni Mubarak towards the establishment of a just and full Mideast peace. talks covered cooperation and bilateral relations between Germany and Egypt on one hand and Europe and Egypt on the other.

Addressing the Joint Parliamentary Session of the  People's Assembly and the Shura (Consultative) Council,President Hosni Mubarak stressed the importance of promoting the march of democracy, enriching national dialogue and welcoming every opposite opinion urged by national interest. Mubarak congratulated the new Assembly on its first session, and voiced confidence that the discussions, that will take place in specialized committees, will be objective and constructive with a view to maintaining the best interest of the Egyptian people.

President Hosni Mubarak held an expanded meeting with senior aides on the implementation of a major development project in Eastern Port Said. During the meeting, attended by senior state officials, Prime Minister Dr. Atef Ebeid presented a comprehensive report on the scheme of building a major port and infrastructure facilities to be carried out as scheduled. Mubarak also reviewed a report on supplying the area with 17,000 cubic meters of water daily on a temporary basis to meet the needs of construction works in the area.

President Hosni Mubarak received French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine and his accompanying delegation. The tour aims at holding talks on the latest developments of the Mideast situation. The talks dealt with the situation in the Mediterranean region, Iraq, new developments in the US arena, the elections in Israel and the chances to establish peace. Establishment of the French university in Egypt as well as other bilateral issues were tackled.

President Mubarak has called on the new People's Assembly to pay wider attention to the interests of citizens when it considers any legislation.The President said the People's Assembly must show higher performance in control and legislation especially in legislations that are associated with low income citizens’interests. The President urged members of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Parliamentary Body to make elaborate discussions on all laws put forward to them, calling on them to introduce amendments that protect citizens’ interests?

President Yasser Arafat’s brief visit to Egypt comes within the framework of the ongoing coordination between Palestine and Egypt under President Hosni Mubarak on the latest developments in the occupied Palestinian territories. Mubarak-Arafat talks elaborated on how to move towards ending the Israeli arbitrary measures against the defenseless Palestinians and how to revive the peace process in a way that would guarantee no recurrence of these perpetrations


Dec 4th , 2000

President Mubarak chaired two ministerial meetings which reviewed rules protecting state lands as well as new draft laws. A cadastral prepared by the Armed Forces with the participation of the Ministries of Tourism, Housing, and Local Development used during the meeting to provide the necessary information.
